The RED & Gold Look

Make sure every branch of your 7 ft Balsam Fir Christmas Tree has been carefully fluffed before you begin adding any decorations. Properly shaping your tree at the beginning creates a fuller silhouette and gives every garland, spray and pick somewhere to sit naturally.

To help, you can stand back every few minutes while fluffing to check how the tree is looking from a distance. This makes it much easier to spot any uneven areas that remain.

Once you’re happy with the shape, position your Red Faux Fur Tree Skirt around the base before the rest of the decorating. Adding your tree skirt first makes it much easier to place neatly around the stand, while introducing the rich red colour that will run throughout the design.

Next, take your Red Velvet Bauble Garlands and Gold Shatterproof Bauble Garlands and lay them out side by side.

Loosely intertwine the two garlands together, weaving the red velvet and gold baubles around one another from one end to the other. Avoid pulling them too tightly, as keeping the garlands slightly loose allows the different colours, sizes and finishes to spread more naturally once they are positioned on the tree.

Combining the two garlands creates a fuller feature piece, while the contrast between the soft red velvet and mixed gold finishes gives the traditional colour palette a more luxurious feel.

As a guide, take a piece of string and position it around the tree in the same way you plan to add the bauble garland. Once you’re happy with the placement, measure the string to give you a clearer idea of how many garlands you may need.

Once the red and gold garlands have been intertwined, begin adding them to the tree in a loose S-shaped design.

Rather than wrapping the garlands evenly around the whole tree, start near the top and gently sweep them across the front, moving from side to side as you work down towards the base. Allow each section to curve naturally rather than pulling the garland too tightly.

Keep the bauble garlands sitting towards the front of the branches so the red velvet and gold remain a prominent feature. Use the individual tree tips to gently hold the garlands in place where needed.

Step back regularly as you work to check the overall shape. The curves do not need to be perfectly symmetrical; the aim is to create a balanced flow from the top of the tree right down to the bottom.

With the main garland design in place, begin adding 40cm Mixed Berry Sprays into the spaces between the garland layers.

Position the sprays among the greenery between each sweep of bauble garland. This helps carry the rich red colour into the undecorated sections of the tree and connects each layer of the design.

As these are larger sprays, you do not need to use too many. Adding them selectively gives the tree plenty of impact without overpowering the bauble garlands.

Spread the individual berry stems naturally across the branches and vary their direction as you work. Some can extend further towards the outer edges of the tree, while others can follow the movement of the garlands.

Next, add 30cm Berry Picks throughout the remaining areas of greenery.

Their smaller size makes them ideal for filling gaps around the garlands, larger sprays and open branches. Work around the tree, placing the picks into areas that are still predominantly green.

Spread the individual stems among the branches so the berries feel naturally woven into the tree rather than sitting in tight clusters. The mixture of deeper red and brighter red tones adds variation, helping the red palette feel richer and less flat.

Continue around the tree until the berries feel evenly distributed, stepping back regularly to check the balance. You still want glimpses of the Balsam Fir foliage to show through, so focus on filling the spaces rather than completely covering them.

Next, take your Gold Leaf Sprays and carefully cut them down into individual stems.

Separating each spray gives you more control over the placement and allows you to use the smaller pieces exactly where they are needed. For this look, keep the gold leaf details concentrated around the bauble garlands rather than spreading them evenly through the open greenery.

Nestle the individual gold stems between the baubles, allowing the leaves to emerge from among the red velvet and gold decorations. Vary the direction of the stems as you work, angling some upwards, some out towards the sides and others slightly downwards.

To finish the tree, create a simple coordinating topper using one of your Berry Picks.

Position the pick vertically through the centre of the top branch, then gently spread the berry stems among the surrounding foliage so t hey feel like a natural continuation of the berries used throughout the tree.

Because the bauble garlands already create such a strong feature, a larger traditional topper could compete with the design below. The single berry pick adds height, colour and detail while keeping the overall look balanced.
Adjust the surrounding branches and berries until the topper feels secure and naturally connected to the rest of the tree.
